The trade winds finally started to blow and clear out the haze that has lingered over the Islands since we arrived providing some spectacular sunsets.

On our first couple of trips to Hawaii in the 1970s, Wardair would serve free Mai Tai's on the flight over. Those days are long gone but you can still get a "Royal" Mai Tai at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

What used to be the largest St Patrick's Day parade outside of New York and Boston, the Honolulu St Patrick's Day parade was only a shadow of its former self. About 20 minutes long with 3 or 4 really good bands and several sports cars was about it. But we can still salute Primo Beer.

We have enjoyed really nice weather since we arrived except for the first evening downpour. It hasn't been so on northern Oahu, Maui and the big Island as heavy rains caused flooding in many areas last week. There were lots of activities going on here in Waikiki, a volleyball tournament, hula lessons, and of course, surfing.

This past weekend was the Honolulu Festival which promotes understanding, economic cooperation, and ethnic harmony between the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim region. A 2 hour long parade (longest parade I have seen without a horse in it) highlighting marching bands, dance groups, queens and princesses from many Pacific countries displayed their customs, all followed with a spectacular fireworks display.

The full moon this week provided a brilliant "moonset" off of Waikiki however a heavy mist on the horizon spoiled the effect. This picture was the best I could do. The other picture proves that I am actually here.

We have spent our first few days here getting supplies at Costco, Ala Moana, and Wards. Still had time to get in a stroll on the beach. Here are some pictures of the local scenery.

Getting settled in, we enjoyed a nice lunch at Duke's, one of our favourites. The lady opposite us on the right had an unusual drink that came with a back scratcher. It's called a "tropical itch". We decided to pass.

Our first trip to Hawaii was in 1974 and we got hooked on McDonald's Hawaiian Fruit Punch. Fortunately it's still here and it's just as good. We have a room with an ocean view, between and around the towers of the Hyatt.

If you select a window seat on the right hand side of the aircraft you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Waikiki as you approach Honolulu Airport. Problems with our computer (and phones) have delayed our blog. We will catch up in the next few days. Sharron and Bob
